Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

Protect your F1 status--avoid serious violations:
  • You must obtain CPT authorization before starting any internship or other academic training related work experience
  • Additionally, you must request an extension before the end date if your CPT period will continue. Working beyond authorized dates on your I-20 is a violation of status
Meet your goals--avoid delays
  • The Priority Deadline for submitting a CPT request is at least 5 business days prior to the date you would like authorized as your start date
  • CPT requests are accepted on a rolling basis and may take up to 5 days to process in high volume times
  • New Student CPT requests submitted toward the end of Orientation Week will not be approved for the semester start; please plan ahead
  • Making sure you have all required signatures, provide all required supporting documentshit the final SUBMIT button on your request
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) regulations state that Curricular Practical Training (CPT) must be directly related to the major and an integral part of an established curriculum. CPT is defined as “alternate work/study, internship, cooperative education, or any other type of required internship or practicum which is offered by sponsoring employers through cooperative agreements with the school.” Thus, CPT for F-1 students is intended to provide work experience in the U.S. in situations where the work serves as an integral part of a student’s academic program and an established curriculum, prior to completion of that program.
